Maria’s Story
Specs4Us was created out of necessity by founder Maria Dellapina when her daughter Erin, who has Down syndrome, needed glasses at just two years old. Despite working in the optical industry, Maria couldn’t find frames that fit Erin’s unique facial features. Recognizing a gap in the market, she redesigned traditional frames by lowering the bridge, widening the front, and adjusting the temple placement to ensure a proper fit and better vision for individuals with Down syndrome.
Maria’s research revealed that 87% of children with Down syndrome require glasses by preschool, reinforcing her belief in the need for her product. Taking a major risk, she left her job while raising two young children to pursue her vision. Founded in 2004, Specs4Us faced early manufacturing challenges, but after years of persistence, the first four frame models were released in 2008 on Erin’s birthday. Initially designed for children ages 4–8, the frames later expanded to all ages, broadening the company’s impact.
Specs4Us stands for Superior Precision Eyewear for Children who are Special and has always been rooted in inclusion. Maria secured a patent to protect her innovative design, which later safeguarded the company from competitors. Driven by her belief that failure is not final and that “glasses should be an accessory, not a necessity,” Maria turned a personal challenge into a life-changing solution for the special needs community.
